sylvie blangy

Sylvie Blangy has been a researcher at the French National Research Center (CNRS, CEFE) in Montpellier, France since 2012.  She is interested in participatory action research, and sustainable development strategies. She holds a PhD in Environmental Geography.

She is currently working in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions in collaboration with the Cree, Inuit and Saami communities, developing community designed and led participatory-action research projects, tools and techniques adapted to aboriginal contexts, addressing their concerns and priorities such as the social and cultural impacts of Industrial development, or the role of tourism in sustaining their culture, language and lifestyles. Sylvie is exploring new research methodologies linking local expertise and scientific knowledge.

 

Research projets

Currently, Sylvie is a researcher at the Centre for Functional and Evolutionary Ecology (CEFE) at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Montpellier, France. She is co-director of the Human–Environment Interactions Observatory (OHMI Nunavik) in northern Quebec and the director of the Research Group for Participatory Action Research and Citizen Sciences (GDR PARCS). One of her focuses is the use of web-based platforms to conduct collaborative research. Her current research projects include:

  • OHMI NUNAVIK: Human–Environment Interactions Observatory in Nunavik 
  • TUKTU: Caribou Inuit and the impacts of mining on traditional livelihoods in the Arctic
  • BOAZU: Saami culture, reindeer herding and global change
  • ACTE: Citizen ownership of the energy transition
  • CIT’ENR: Multi-stakeholder co-development of renewable energy

Scientific Productions

To date, Sylvie has published 50 peer-reviewed articles, 3 books, 2 special issues, and 10 book chapters, guides and monographs.

Professional experience

Formerly Sylvie was a senior researcher and Chair of Tourism at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and a researcher and professor at Carleton University, University of Ottawa and University of Montpellier, among others. Previous to that she was an international ecotourism consultant, in which capacity she worked in Latin America, Africa and Europe with partners such as the European Union, the World Bank, French, German and US development agencies, the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Tourism Organization and the UN Environment Programme. She was also the Director of the Department of Sustainable Tourism and Local Development at SECA, an eco-development company in Montpellier, where she worked with numerous clients, including the French Ministry of Agriculture, to develop rural tourism offers. Her book Le Guide des Destinations Indigènes (https://aborinet.cefe.cnrs.fr) is a guide to ecotourism and Indigenous tourism initiatives around the world.

Collaboration

In recent years, Sylvie has been collaborating with Cree, Inuit and Saami communities in Arctic and sub-Artic regions to develop participatory action research projects for Indigenous contexts. The goal is to ensure these projects address their concerns, such as the social and cultural impacts of industrial development and the role of tourism in sustaining their culture, language and lifestyle. In her projects, she is exploring new ways to link local expertise and scientific knowledge (TUKTU, BOAZU and ABORINET).
