Field-collected soil from monospecific and mixed tree stands are incubated in the microcosm platform at the European Ecotron in Montpellier and exposed to extreme drought events with subsequent rewetting. We assess the resistance and resilience of process rates in response to drought and the relationships to diversity with measurements of microbial-driven processes by measuring CO<sub>2<\/sub> and N<sub>2<\/sub>O fluxes before and after the drought event and after rewetting.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Ecosystem resistance and resilience to extreme drought <\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1110 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/websie.cefe.cnrs.fr\/soilforeurope\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/L1140837_gimp_copyright-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/websie.cefe.cnrs.fr\/soilforeurope\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/L1140837_gimp_copyright-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/websie.cefe.cnrs.fr\/soilforeurope\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/L1140837_gimp_copyright-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/websie.cefe.cnrs.fr\/soilforeurope\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/L1140837_gimp_copyright-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/websie.cefe.cnrs.fr\/soilforeurope\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/L1140837_gimp_copyright-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In an experiment in the mesocosm platform of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecotron.cnrs.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">European Ecotron<\/a> in Montpellier (sixteen units with a surface area of 1m<sup>2<\/sup> and a soil depth of 1m each), we manipulate the functional diversity of soil fauna to test ecosystem responses to an extreme drought event. The use of the Ecotron mescosms allows us to test the interactive effects of increasing soil functional diversity and extreme drought on ecosystem scale H<sub>2<\/sub>O and CO<sub>2<\/sub> fluxes, and to evaluate ecosystem resistance and resilience to drought.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Interactive effects of climate change and changing tree species diversity <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With a third approach addressing interactive effects between biodiversity and climate change, we include two planted-tree diversity experiments that combine tree species richness gradients with climate change treatments, notably the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treedivnet.ugent.be\/ExpORPHEE.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ORPHEE<\/a>&nbsp;(France, watering treatment to avoid summer drought) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treedivnet.ugent.be\/ExpFORBIO.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FORBIO<\/a> (Belgium, a 30% rain exclusion) experiments.
