Climate change – Objective 3

 

Soil biodiversity can have a major impact on ecosystem resistance and resilience to climate change, which is of particular relevance for future forest management. Current approaches to anticipate the effects of changing climatic conditions in forestry neglect belowground diversity entirely.

 

Using the broad climatic gradient of the FunDivEUROPE exploratories, we investigate the relationships between below- and aboveground diversity, ecosystem functioning, and climatic variables with multivariate analyses and structural equation modelling (SEM). With experimental approaches using existing tree diversity experiments combined with climate change manipulations in the field (FORBIO and ORPHEE, part of the global network of tree diversity experiments TreeDivNet) and the CNRS European Ecotron, we evaluate how soil biodiversity is affected by climate change and how soil biodiversity affects ecosystem resistance and resilience to severe drought.
