Function – Objective 2

Develop a predictive framework for how soil biodiversity affects the functioning of forest ecosystems.

The collected belowground biodiversity data (Objective 1) will be related to a number of ecosystem functions in order to develop a predictive framework for how soil biodiversity affects the functioning of forest ecosystems. A large number of ecosystem functions have already been measured during FunDivEUROPE. Other soil-specific functions (fine root decomposition, enzyme activities, nitrification and denitrification rates, physiological profiles and biomass of microbial communities, and soil respiration) will be measured by SoilForEUROPE to complement this pre-existing data.
